Everything will be fine

THE GOOD IS SO CLOSE

Plump bitter oranges hang from the trees, and the first blossoms open with their beguiling scent. People enjoy the sun in street cafés and cats use the awnings as hammocks. This newsletter is being written in Athens, where spring is not just a vague idea but already very much present. Practice patience and poise on the sofa like our porcelain lady and remember: 1st of March is the official start of spring here – at least meteorologically speaking.

COMMUNITY
Today marks not only the end of the Winter Olympics, an event that traditionally stands for team spirit, but also, coincidentally, the final on 22nd of February – as if the repetition of the number, which is supposed to signify cooperation and partnership, emphasises the importance of community. The Greeks have a beautiful term for this: philia. According to Aristotle, connection and friendship are based on mutual admiration of character and the desire for the other's well-being. We wish you a little more philia and a little less frustration this Sunday, even if it's hard to recognise character under hats, scarves and three layers of clothing in the persistent grey weather. Everything is easier to bear when we're together.

Alexandra Freifrau von Wangenheim stands smiling in an elegantly furnished living room, holding Josef Wackerle's porcelain figurine ‘Lady in an Armchair’ in her hands. In the background is a dark shelf with various porcelain figurines.

MY FAVOURITE PIECE: A LADY WITH CONTENANCE
Serenity is a virtue that also makes everyday life much easier. The ideal role model: the ‘Lady in an Armchair’, a design by Josef Wackerle from 1906. The model is not only Alexandra Freifrau von Wangenheim's favourite piece because of its casual pose. ‘This elegant lady sits in her armchair with a wonderful expression of self-sufficiency,’ says the project developer at the porcelain manufactory, who – between you and me – is in no way inferior to the figurine in terms of posture. However, Wackerle's lady is better at mastering the art of fan-waving as a non-verbal means of communication, says Alexandra von Wangenheim self-critically. Gestures, facial expressions and posture – everything seems to say: ‘The cliffs of life are there to be navigated.’ Even though Wackerle's lady represents the declining Art Nouveau style, her attitude is timeless, self-confident and sovereign.

White porcelain breakfast set with faceted surface: two bowls, two plates and two mugs, one bowl filled with red currants on a light background

PURITY
While Carnival in Germany came to an end four days ago on Ash Wednesday, the Greeks will only begin their period of abstinence tomorrow with Kathará Deftéra, or Clean Monday. The principle is similar to Christian Lent, but here, unsurprisingly, it is heralded with plenty of food. The traditional picnic features vegetables, fruit, seafood, vine leaves, wine and ouzo, with meat being the only thing not served. Delicate paper kites float above everything, symbolising the purification and elevation of the soul. At the porcelain manufactory, we are surrounded by pure white porcelain all year round – which certainly has a positive effect on our inner selves.
