Discover masterpieces

SIMPLY THE BEST

The Japanese dictionary may contain fewer words than the Duden, but it does contain some extremely expressive terms: Komorebi, for example, refers to sunlight shining through tree leaves. Yugen describes the physically perceptible beauty of an object, while Enryo refers to restraint for the benefit of others. Takumi is simply translated as craftsman, but behind it lies a concept of precision, perfection and the lifelong pursuit of excellence. If this newsletter seems a little Japanese to you, it's because of the selection of masterpieces from the manufactory. We wish you a Sunday in optima forma.

MASTERPIECES

‘Taste. An inconspicuous word, an enigmatic concept. Unpredictable in its choices, reliable only in its penchant for controversy.’ So writes feature writer and historian Ulrich Raulff in his recently published 420-page essay ‘Wie es euch gefällt’ (As You Like It). Taste is debatable, excellence is not. It is undoubtedly an honour when the National Museum in Munich's Prinzregentenstraße, the Bavarian Louvre, exhibits works. The collection of Nymphenburg porcelain there is unique: originals from the 18th century that have survived the passage of time despite their fragility, masterpieces by Anton Bustelli, Domenikus Auliczek and porcelain painter Joseph Zächenberger. To this day, their playful figures, sophisticated table centrepieces and lifelike decorations are still produced in our manufactory. These are pieces that combine art and everyday life. You can now find a tribute to these outstanding designs on our website. Or, if you are in Munich, the Bavarian National Museum is open until 5PM today.

Porcelain painter contemplates Nymphenburg hedgehog fish figurine in front of historic window

MY FAVOURITE PIECE: THE MASTER OF DEFENCE

Luise Terletzki-Scherf's figures can also be found in several museums in this country. Among the 50 animals she created for the manufactory, the hedgehog fish occupies a special place: it has taken hearts by storm – including that of porcelain painter Eszter Nánási. The Hungarian-born artist believes that this 1958 design is a must for the ‘My Favourite Piece’ series. ‘The fish has a lot of character, it seems to be smiling,’ says the 33-year-old, who swears that it can chase away dark thoughts. In nature, the Diodontidae puffs itself up to scare off enemies. This is actually a very courteous tactic, as the fish is highly poisonous. The behaviour suits Eszter, who has been working at the factory for eight years and is a thoroughly positive and cheerful person. Perhaps that's why her porcupine fish look particularly cheerful? ‘The painter's personality always flows through the brush,’ reveals Eszter. Her dream? To see a real specimen in the Indian Ocean one day.

Luna wall lamp made of Nymphenburg bisque porcelain with soft glow

MASTER OF STAGING

One last time Japan: Heiwa na akari means peaceful light. Porcelain has the property of emitting a particularly soft light. The shade of the Luna wall lamp, made of wafer-thin biscuit porcelain, is reminiscent of the transparency of the elegant Nymphenburg teacups. Even switching on the lamp is like a ceremony, because that is when the respective décor comes into its own: the relief in the ‘Heritage’ model, the coat of arms of the porcelain manufactory embossed with a fine blind stamp, the individually customisable paintings or the plastic structure that is created when liquid porcelain is applied by hand in layers to form shapes and figures, which appear as magical shadows when illuminated. Behind this lies the traditional pâte-sur-pâte technique, which our porcelain painters have mastered to perfection.
