Celebrations

LET'S PARTY

There are probably as many recipes for a successful party as there are for potato salad. New York interior designer Elsie de Wolfe recommended “more men than women, cold drinks and French cuisine”; photographer Lee Miller went for showmanship, serving blue spaghetti or a gilded meatloaf; and London’s Savoy Hotel would seat a wooden cat named Kaspar at the table to ward off bad luck whenever only 13 guests turned up for dinner.
Autumn – and goodness, is it really September already? – marks the beginning of party and event season. Don’t worry: amid all the revelry, we’ll make sure there are quieter moments, too. After all, Shakespeare already knew: “If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work.”

BETWEEN ROCOCO AND THE COACH HOUSE
It still feels too early to say goodbye to tables beneath the wisteria pavilion, or to lunches that begin with courgette involtini and end with apricot tart. But there are places perfectly suited to this transitional time of year. The former stable on the manufactory grounds is reminiscent of the Hameau de la Reine, that perfect imitation of a rural idyll, while offering shelter from autumn rain and storms for events of up to 70 guests. Company parties and family celebrations can take place in this rustic-romantic setting; press days and anniversaries find a backdrop that has retained its authentic character even after renovation. And the former stable is just one of many places to celebrate on the Nymphenburg campus: from the sculpture garden and intimate Hunting Room to the Blue Salon overlooking Nymphenburg Palace and the Green Schleif between the workshops and the palace stream – the loci celebrationis are as varied as the occasions themselves. If you’re now in the mood to celebrate, simply get in touch with us at event@nymphenburg.com and we’ll be happy to put together a proposal tailored to your event.

BETWEEN WIESN AND MEADOWS
The Wiesn is a celebration where the guests happen to number in the millions. You can regard the whole spectacle with consternation, throw yourself into it wholeheartedly, or ignore it altogether. Anything goes. But anyone who has walked across the grounds early on a Sunday morning, hearing the occasional clatter of horses’ hooves because beer barrels are still delivered by horse-drawn carriage, seeing coloured lights reflected in a gleaming tuba and catching the scent of roasted almonds and candyfloss in the air, falls in love with Oktoberfest all over again each year. Whether you arrive for the opening on 19 September fully decked out in traditional dress is a matter of personal conviction. Even Wiesn minimalists, however, can pay tribute to the occasion with a small accessory. One highlight this year: our porcelain medallions (from €190) are hand-painted with delicate flowers, each one entirely unique. Cyclamen, roses and meadow flowers recall the tradition of decorating bodices or hats with flowers as an expression of joie de vivre. Let us know your favourite when ordering and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes.

MY FAVOURITE PIECE: BETWEEN GLASS AND PORCELAIN
As an interior designer, Michael Sarreiter has devoted himself to the inner life of buildings and knows just how important light sources are in creating atmosphere. No wonder the 46-year-old has chosen the Colo table lamp as his favourite piece – and gives three reasons: the combination of porcelain and mouth-blown Theresienthal glass, the cleverly pared-back design in which base and shade interlock, and, last but not least, the light itself. “It is a small miracle that when light falls on porcelain, it always appears white. But place the light behind it and a warm, atmospheric glow emerges.” For the Munich-born designer, that light recalls warm spring days in Mallorca, particularly in the version with the glass base in Acacia. “The tree blossoms in the island’s gardens and glows in the most beautiful shades of red at sunset. A spectacle!”
