Where Avantgarde Meets Tradition

TRADITION IST TREND

Pling! There was a time when this sound belonged exclusively to champagne coupes being gently raised in celebration. Today, it is more likely to be the sound of notifications, messages and reminders urging us to rise from the sofa. The world has become loud, fast-paced and demanding. It is hardly surprising, then, that traditions have become an anchor in modern life. Long-standing customs are experiencing a renaissance, handwritten letters are once again appreciated for the personal gesture they represent – especially in the age of email – and the traditional Sunday roast is finding its place at the table once more. At the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg, we have always felt deeply connected to tradition: through designs dating back to the 18th century, time-honoured techniques and historic recipes passed down through generations. We believe that heritage and avant-garde are not opposites, but belong together. This Sunday, discover beauty wherever you look.

A DRESS WITH A STORY
Travelling through time is no easy undertaking – one usually reserved for literary protagonists such as Goethe’s Homunculus or Audrey Niffenegger’s Henry DeTamble. Yet when a garment succeeds in bridging centuries, it is the result of something truly exceptional. To mark its 165th anniversary, Ludwig Beck, former Royal Bavarian Court Passementerie, has collaborated with the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg to create an extraordinary dirndl. The jacquard fabric draws inspiration from the pattern of Nymphenburg’s Cumberland series, originally designed in 1765 by Joseph Zächenberger. The bodice is adorned with eight porcelain buttons – each one unique and hand-painted by master porcelain painter Julius Gräf, who has meticulously reinterpreted the elaborate Rococo motif in miniature. Only eleven of these traditional dresses have been created exclusively for Ludwig Beck. A piece destined to stand out for years to come – whether at summer festivities, Oktoberfest, or private celebrations. Price: €1,500

A MONTH OF TRADITIONS
When top hats are dusted off and handcarts brought out once again, it is a sure sign that Father’s Day is approaching. Yet it is only one of many occasions throughout May on which long-standing traditions are celebrated.
At Pentecost this coming weekend, for instance, red rose petals will once again fall from the ceiling of Rome’s Pantheon – symbolising the descent of the Holy Spirit. In England, the traditional Whit Walks are enjoying renewed popularity: colourful processions of parish communities through towns and countryside, accompanied by brass bands. Across the Alpine regions, Pentecost is likewise marked by festive parades. Here, however, the stars of the celebrations are flower-adorned oxen returning to the mountain pastures after the winter months. Elsewhere, homes are decorated with young birch branches and colourful ribbons – expressions of springtime joy and reverence for the season’s renewal.
