THE BLUE SHELL A place of fascination: Gelsenkirchen. Yes, really. The city in Germany's Ruhr region is one of the hosts of Manifesta 16, the nomadic European biennial. Until 4 October, visitors can discover art and architecture across four cities and twelve venues throughout the region. Among the participating artists is Justin Lieberman. An Engine, the multimedia artist's ceramic body of work, was created in the majolica workshop of the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. At its centre are turtle shells which, unlike our lifelike Tortuga figures, take on sculptural, abstract forms. Their inspiration is a million-year-old turtle that once lived on the ancient supercontinent of Pangaea, in a habitat spanning every imaginable extreme. The domed shells evoke desert dunes, while their blue-and-white glaze references the polar regions. Perhaps the sculpture, set in the pond of the former St. Bonifatius Church in Gelsenkirchen, will tell you an entirely different, equally wondrous story. |
