Just a Moment!

SNAIL MAIL

“Onward, onward, always on the run. Onward, as though it were coming to catch him,” wrote Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in her poem The Boy in the Moor. Our moor? The streets we navigate every day. In recent years, the pace of walking has picked up dramatically, as though the ground were burning beneath our feet. No Italian would dream of turning the passeggiata into a race. The French, at least outside Paris, tend to move at the pace of a ripening Camembert. And perhaps the fact that the original marathon ended in Athens has something to do with the fact that nobody in that city ever seems to run. Besides, think of all the things you notice when you take your time! How much easier it is to strike up a conversation when you're in no hurry! And how, with every step, that constant feeling of being rushed gradually gives way to a wonderful sense of ease. This Sunday is the perfect day to try out a slower pace.

SUNDAY IN SLOW MOTION
“Grass doesn't grow any faster if you pull on it,” goes an African proverb. In Norway, they say: “Sow haste and reap restlessness.” With the clocks going back next weekend, gardens will soon be settling down for winter anyway, and despite the earlier sunsets, there's still plenty of time for a leisurely stroll. And when you get home, bring that unhurried mood indoors. Put on a record rather than a playlist and listen to Arvo Pärt or Zaho de Sagazan. Let a ragù simmer for hours. Perhaps finally tackle all 5,200 pages of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Add some inviting light to this Sunday in slow motion, and suddenly the shorter days have an appeal all their own. Porcelain lamps help define a space and create a warm atmosphere in which it's easy to lose track of time, whether you're cooking, reading or simply letting your mind wander.

TIME TO STEEP
If your thoughts happen to turn to tea while you're doing very little, consider what a wonderful drink it is: zero calories, more than 3,000 varieties and an almost endless range of flavours. No wonder Germans alone drink 47 billion cups a year. Even making a cup of tea is a small ritual in slowing down. There's no need to devote several hours to Chadō, the Japanese tea ceremony built around harmony, respect, purity and tranquillity. Simply boiling the water (and getting the temperature just right), warming the teapot, pouring the water and waiting for the tea to steep can be a little exercise in Zen. Green tea, and especially matcha, also contains L-theanine, an amino acid known for its calming effect on the nervous system. And if you prefer black tea, try adding a spoonful of cream in the East Frisian tradition. You'll be rewarded with Wulkjes, little clouds of cream that form beautiful patterns in your porcelain cup, changing shape with every sip.

MOMENTS THAT LAST FOREVER
When it comes to taking life at their own pace, pets are hard to beat. The neighbour's cat, for example, can spend hours following a patch of sunlight across the living room, basking in it like a feline Louis XIV. A visiting dog may politely acknowledge its breed description as an “enduring Italian running hound”, only to spend its walk ambling from one pile of leaves to the next blade of grass and then on to a fence post, making the very idea of speed seem rather absurd. Time? Completely irrelevant. Animals live in the here and now, happily sleeping for up to 16 hours a day and only showing any real urgency when food or enemies are involved. The rest of the time? Pure enjoyment and endless patience. Perhaps they've been reading Goethe? After all, he knew a thing or two about it: “Peace of mind is a wonderful thing, as is the joy of being oneself.”
