Flower Children

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

May is the Tom Hanks of the months: well liked, sunny in temperament, free of scandal. Expectations run high. He is meant to play the role of the merry month, to make everything new, to be generous with both joy and ease. We entrust him with garden parties, weddings and baptisms under open skies. We plant, hoping for gardens and balconies in bloom throughout the summer. We dare a first plunge into outdoor pools, lakes and seas. May asks—if we may borrow freely from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens—for love against all reason, against every promise, against any discouragement that may arise. We wish you a Sunday on which you reach your own personal May-lestones.

BLOOMING STYLE

The neighbor’s children eagerly gather ivy leaves, weeds and fallen cherry blossoms in their small hands: table decorations for the first garden party of the year. What would a long table be without thoughtful adornment? Or life itself, without flowers? In Hawaii, flower garlands are given as a sign of appreciation and hospitality, meant to feel like an embrace. The Polynesian tradition of the lei is—unsurprisingly—celebrated each year in May. Here, too, flowers speak of affection when they are given on Mother’s Day. The peony tells of comfort, the dahlia of connection and gratitude, the iris symbolizes trust, and with the chrysanthemum we wish for longevity and happiness. With everlasting table flowers, hand-painted or in pure white bisque porcelain, these meanings endure far beyond Mother’s Day on May 11.

FULL BLOOM

In antiquity, May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of vegetation and fertility of ancient Roman origin, already venerated by the Sabines. Perhaps that is why lovers so often choose this month to marry? Or perhaps Saint Peter plays a part, keeping the temperatures in a pleasant balance. Or the poet Friedrich Hebbel, whose words still resonate: “A day in May is a categorical imperative of joy.” Whatever the reason, the wedding season begins now. For this special occasion, couples may not only rent the manufactory’s rooms and gardens, but also create a wedding registry of their personal wishes. Guests may select their gifts from it, and the couple receives these treasures on their wedding day. We would be pleased to assist you in choosing the figures, vases or tableware with which to begin your new life together: info@nymphenburg.com

SECOND BLOOM
Some loves are no longer at the beginning, but have endured for many years. At times, a sense of routine sets in, a desire for change arises. We are speaking, of course, not of relationships, but of porcelain. This is where our Generation T comes in. “It’s not my favorite piece, but my favorite project,” says Friederike Klesper. The manufactory’s design and project developer is drawn to Hella Jongerius’s idea of giving historic porcelain treasures a new appearance. “The ‘T’ stands for tradition, transformation and table culture. I find it remarkable when, for instance, an 18th-century plate becomes a unique new work of art through hand-painted overdecoration. What is served on it is not only a dish, but also layers of family history and new conversations at the table.” Like a second skin, the designs Weeds and Dripping settle over found pieces from the attic or inherited objects from a cabinet. An upcycling project for those with a refined eye, for art lovers, and for anyone who values sustainability. It is no coincidence that Friederike Klesper—who, in her free time, is actively involved in educational and cultural initiatives in Ethiopia and South America—values the idea of Generation T not only for its visual appeal, but above all for its deeper meaning.
