MY FAVORITE PIECE: LADY RHINOCEROS CLARA Rhinoceros Clara, the mascot of the Porcelain Manufactory Nymphenburg, radiates delight, wit, and daring. This is precisely what makes the figure—modelled in 1770 by Peter Anton van Verschaffelt after the first Indian rhinoceros ever to live in Europe—the favourite piece of Anders Thomas. “She is my companion,” says the CEO, “joining me at every appointment at home and abroad.” Like her living prototype, she travels the world—journeying to New York and Hong Kong, India and Canada. And like the original, she is admired and marveled at wherever she appears—especially when the CEO recounts her adventurous history. “She was the Taylor Swift of her time,” Anders Thomas laughs. Wherever he arrives with the porcelain version, conversation follows. “There is no better icebreaker.” And the CEO reveals one more detail about his travel companion: depending on the angle, she looks either mischievous or critical. However one turns and views Clara, she remains endlessly fascinating. |

ANIMAL VIRTUES While Clara is a symbol of adventurous spirit, other figures also remind us of different possibilities. With gardens currently frozen over, one might wholeheartedly turn to the virtues of the snail. It stands not only for slowness, but also for calmly following one’s own path and working steadily, undeterred, toward personal or professional goals. In Buddhism, the elephant embodies strength, diligence, and intelligence. At the same time, the mighty animal can be seen as a reminder not to take everything on board, but to consciously seek out and pursue what is good. With its comical waddle, the penguin can be read as a source of cheer; yet it also speaks of loyalty and deep bonds. Another interpretation of this master swimmer, so awkward on land: it takes the right environment to fully express one’s strengths. And if you are still observing Veganuary and prefer consistently plant-based symbolism, you may, on this Slow Sunday, already spot the first snowdrops—bravely defying the cold and, with their bowed heads, heralding new beginnings and optimism. |
