A Greek Episode

TEAM BLUE AND WHITE

When the Galanólefki, the Greek flag, is flying, you know you are in good hands. Filoxenia – hospitality – culture and cuisine can be found even on the smallest island. In Athens, locals even claim that if you were to eat every meal out, every day of the year, you still wouldn’t manage to discover all the city’s restaurants. And the cultural scene? Four thousand years of history and contemporary creativity are ever-present. Autumn is the perfect time to explore the city. Alongside the Acropolis, enchanting Anafiotika, wonderful bakeries such as Takis in Koukaki and a sundowner on the rooftop terrace of The Dolli, there is currently one more reason to visit that is especially close to our hearts. Read on and join us in Greece in this newsletter.

CREWLOVE
On Mount Olympus, the twelve gods and goddesses were evenly matched – something that also finds its echo in ancient architecture. Caryatids and atlantes are female and male figures that serve as columns and pillars, supporting palaces, balconies and pediments. For her current exhibition Fates at Gagosian in Athens, Rachel Feinstein drew inspiration from these female supporting figures and worked with Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg to create two majolica caryatids for her Greek debut. Including their bases, Helen and Petra each stand 2.40 metres tall. Their scale alone presented a challenge, as did working with terracotta and the painting process, where every brushstroke is final. Over ten intensive days, the artist worked side by side with our craftspeople in the Nymphenburg workshops to bring the project to life. The result can be seen until 9 January 2027. And if you are already at the gallery in Kolonaki, do take the short hike up Lycabettus Hill behind it and enjoy the view across the city all the way to the sea.

WOMEN’S TEAM
In the animal kingdom, it is often the males that are the more magnificent, colourful and larger specimens: the lion with his impressive mane, the peacock with jewel-like tail feathers, the mandrill with his vivid red rear. Well, quite a lot is permitted in matters of love … But there are exceptions to sexual dimorphism. The famous praying mantis, for instance, is considerably larger than her male counterpart. In the Scandinavian red-necked phalarope, it is the female that wears the more colourful plumage and, in this dazzling attire, also takes on the defence of the territory. In most owl species, too, the females are noticeably larger than the males. Our porcelain owls and Ruth Gurvich’s artist originals are, regardless of stature, decoration or purpose, splendid specimens in their own right. Whether you choose to carry one of them off to Athens is entirely up to you.
