PERSONALITIES

Travelling across the country by train is a great way to learn a lot. About the beauty of the landscape. About points, overhead lines and other traffic control devices. But above all, about people. Some are friendly, relaxed and considerate. Others are perpetually irritable and best ignored. It should be noted that both types can be found among all genders and identities. Today, on International Women's Day, we would nevertheless like to focus on the women who have shaped the manufactory for almost 300 years: some behind the scenes, some as silent witnesses made of porcelain, others as artists visible worldwide. We wish you a wonderful Sunday!

AT THE FOREFRONT
Today, artistic collaboration with craftswomen, designers and artists is an integral part of our manufactory. This was not always the case, as fine, fragile porcelain, like so many other things, was long considered a male domain. Art as a profession? It was not until 1813 that the first woman was able to secure a place at a German art academy. On today's International Women's Day, pioneers such as the Frenchwoman Marie-Victoire Jaquotot, who painted a tea service for Napoleon, and the Roman Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi deserve special thanks. With verve and courage, they paved the way for all those women who today enrich the world of porcelain as a matter of course: for example, Luise Terletzki-Scherf with her more than 50 enchanting animal figures such as the hedgehog fish, Ruth Gurvich with her Lightscape collection reminiscent of origami, Hella Jongerius, who reinterprets old treasures, and jewellery made of gold and porcelain by Marla Aaron.

CLOSER TOGETHER
If you want to discover the wonders currently being created by masters of their craft, we recommend visiting Praterinsel in Munich next week. At Munich Design Days 2026, we will be joining other exhibitors such as Walter Knoll, Sattler and Schönbuch in the studios to showcase some of our highlights: among other things, you can experience animal figures made of white bisque porcelain, architectural objects and vases for colourful spring flowers up close. Perhaps you will discover a few cherry branches during your Sunday stroll along the Isar that you would like to arrange in them. The event is primarily aimed at interior design professionals, but – after prior registration – it is worth a visit for anyone looking for inspiration and aesthetics. We look forward to welcoming you in person at this unique location from 12th to 15th of March.

CLOSE-UP
Jean Paul may be right in his ‘remark about us foolish humans’: distant mountains are more sublime than those nearby. While some things or people may indeed be better appreciated from a distance, the opposite is true of Nymphenburg porcelain. When viewed up close, each piece reveals surprising and astonishing details: delicate air seeds on a cup from the Lotus series, translucent pearl plates, and individual folds and bumps on the shell of Clara the rhinoceros. Whether at home, at Design Days or at the manufactory at Schlossrondell – it is a pleasure to hold the objects in your hands and use them. Even washing up can become an experience.
